Until now, about the worst thing you could say about the area surrounding Orlando, Florida was that its primary business enterprise refused to allow its male employees to sport mustaches despite the fact that Walt Disney himself was the proud wearer of just such facial accouterments. Until this week, that was true, as far as the general public was aware.
But a raid and series of arrests which began this past week-end and ran through Tuesday nabbed ten members of the violent hate-group the American Front, right smack dab in the middle of Orange County, Florida, just eleven quick miles from Disney World.
The arrests followed an investigation led by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Orange County Sheriff's Office. The current charges against the ten are (1) paramilitary training, (2) shooting into an occupied dwelling, and (3) evidence of prejudice while committing an offense.
All ten of those arrested are members of the American Front, or AF, a self-styled neo-Nazi skinhead group modeled after the British National Front, and active in central Florida and elsewhere. Arrested were Marcus and Patricia Faella, Christopher Brooks, Richard Stockdale, Kent McLellan, Jennifer and Mark McGowan, Diane Stevens, Paul Jackson, and Dustin Perry. Marcus and Patricia Faella, the two prime suspects, have been released after posting individual bonds of $500,000.
What is the American Front and what have they been doing? In November 2011, a member named Jessy Brown, "committed suicide" with a shotgun belonging to Marcus Faella. In January 2012, one of their recruits beat up a former member for remarks the latter made on Facebook. And according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, the group had planned to wage an attack on May 1 of this year--May Day--against a rival and non-racist group of skinheads called REDS.
Until he was murdered on March 2, 2011, David Lynch was the group's leader. The gang originally hailed from California, but now calls Florida home. The group is active in that state's cities of Lynn Haven and St. Cloud, both located in Orange County. The gang also has members in at least three cities in New Jersey.
It appears that Faella maybe just an organizational insect vying for a supreme leadership role in the AF. Until recently, the group was under the control of James Porazzo, an advocate of the so-called "Third Position," a neo-Nazi (racist socialist) philosophy that offers a hate-based alternative to global capitalism, an idea which economic crises makes appealing to the already-disenfranchised. The AF's enemies, in short, are two. First, there is what they call the Zionist-controlled economic system, and second, non-racist skinhead groups perceived to be "race-traitors."
According to the Anti-Defamation League: "Although American Front is not particularly large, it is one of the oldest continuously active racist skinhead groups in the United States. However, few original members are still with the group; most of the current membership is new. American Front has a legacy of criminal activity that ranges from brutal hate crimes to acts of terrorism. To broaden its support base and recruit members, the American Front has affiliated itself with racist skinhead and neo-Nazi groups across the country, particularly in California. In addition, the group has promoted support for members of The Order, a white supremacist terrorist group that carried out armed robberies, assassinations and other crimes during the 1980s."
The American Front founded by Bob Heick in 1990 either in Portland, Oregon or in San Francisco, California. Within a few years, the AF had spread across the northwest and beyond. Their members have been arrested in Napa, San Francisco, Sacramento, Pennsylvania, Florida, Maryland and Washington. Heick, a high school dropout, initially came into contact with racist skinhead culture in Britain in 1984. Back then the racist National Front was beating up anti-racist skinheads for control of the British skinhead movement. When Heick came back to the United States, he found no shortage of hate and started up his own skinhead organization. Membership in American Front is by an application only which implies that if a member betrays the organization, the punishment is death by crucifixion, at least according to the California Gang Investigators Association. This is a common attitude among skinheads, who are typically quite unforgiving toward those who try to leave the movement.

AF members have committed several violent crimes. In 1991, police offers searching a Beaverton, Oregon residence found a "hit list" of Portland police officers who were to be targeted. In California and Washington during July of 1993, there was a series of bombings targeting public meeting places for blacks, gays and Jews in California and Washington. AF members Wayne Paul Wooten, Jeremiah Gordon Knesal and Mark Kowaalski were convicted of committing two of those attacks: the bombing of the Elite Tavern (a gay club) on July 22, and the bombing of an NAACP meeting hall on July 20. According to U.S. Attorney Mike Yamaguchi, Wooten, Knesal and Kowaalski were part of a larger conspiracy to incite race war. The bombings seem to have been timed to coincide with the sentencing of the police officers convicted in the Rodney King case, presumably to take advantage of heightened racial tension connected with the case.
To put it most simply, these are seriously psychotic guys who have the zealous glow of most true believers. You see it in churches, in political campaigns, among ethnic gang members and most of all among the fascist thugs of the skinhead movement who, just like the Faella family, lived in a trailer and maintained a compound guarded by pit bills.
One myth that should be exploded--pardon the expression--is that they are all a bunch of high school drop-outs. Au contraire, mon frere. Some of these folks are from money and some have decent or even exceptional educations. Take Valkyrie, true name Liz Bullis. She attended Oxford before being expelled for racist activities and comes from a well-to-do family. Nowadays she leads POWAR, the Portland Oregon White Aryan Resistance. Then there's Lynn Metzger, daughter of Tom, himself founder of White Aryan Resistance (WAR).
So once again we must be on guard of things that go bump in the night. The history of pseudo-satanic neo-Nazi cretinism is alive and well. And getting its tattoos in the Florida sunshine.
Meanwhile, kudos to Cher, who had the grand sense of humor and simple good sense to post the following on Twitter yesterday: "If Mitt Romney gets elected I don't know if I can breathe same air as Him & his Right Wing Racist Homophobic Women-Hating Tea Bagger Masters. They care nothing about the POOR The OLD The SICK The HUNGRY CHILDREN & People striving 4 a Better Life." Told by a fellow Twitter user that her remarks probably cost her half her fans, she responded: "Thank God I Got the half that thinks!"
In other quick and vital news, it turns out that on the same day that Mitt Romney admitted forcibly cutting the hair of a male student who was gay when both he and the student were in high school, a pusillanimous polecat named Todd (of course) Starnes told his Fox News audience that public schools are "indoctrination centers for LGBT rights." This would be true if by "rights" Starnes means the right to have your head shaved by a rich and mean little fuck who would grow up to fire anybody who got in his way, brag about his unearned wealth on television, and attempt to buy his way into national office. Yeah, Starnes: Indoctrinate THIS!
